DIN stands for Director Identification Number allotted by the Central Government to any person intending to be a Director or an existing director of a company. This concept has been introduced for the first time with the insertion of Sections 266A to 266G of Companies (Amendment) Act, 2006.
DIN is an 8-digit unique identification number, through which the details of directors are maintained in the database.
Whenever a return, an application, or any information related to a company will be submitted under any law, the director signing such return, application or information will mention his DIN underneath his signature.
1. SPICe Form: Application for allotment of DINs to the proposed first Directors in respect of New companies shall be made in SPICe form only.
2. DIR-3 Form: Any person intending to become a director in an already existing company shall have to make an application in eForm DIR-3 for allotment of DIN.
3. DIR-6 Form: Any changes in the particulars of the directors shall be filed in form DIR-6.
To apply for DIN, the above forms are to be filed electronically. It has to be digitally signed and then uploaded on the MCA21 portal (http://www.mca.gov.in/mcafoportal/login.do).

What is the Director Identification Number?
DIN is a unique Identification Number allotted to an individual who is appointed as director of a company, upon making an application in form DIR-3 pursuant to section 153 & 154 of the Companies Act, 2013.
My DIN application has been rejected. Am I required to apply for a fresh DIN?
Yes, you will have to apply for a fresh DIN.
Whether provisional DIN can be used for e-Filing?
No, the particulars of the person with the provisional DIN number cannot be filled in the eforms and the person cannot sign as a director.
Whether Income Tax PAN is mandatory while applying for DIN?
Income tax PAN is mandatory for Indian nationals however the same is optional for foreign nationals. If Income-tax PAN is entered, it shall be mandatory to click on the ‘Verify income-tax PAN’ button. Applicant’s name (first, middle and last name), applicant’s father’s name (first, middle and last name) and date of birth should be as per the income-tax PAN details.
What will happen if the details entered in the DIN application are not as per the Income Tax PAN database?
Filing of DIN application shall not be allowed if the details entered in the form are not as per the Income-tax database.
What additional information or documents are required in the case of foreign nationals?
Details of a valid passport should be filled and a certified copy of the same should be attached with the DIN application. All supporting documents including photographs should be certified by the Indian Embassy or a notary in the home country of the applicant or by the practicing chartered accountant or company secretary or cost accountant. If a foreign director has a valid multiple-entry Indian visa or Person of Indian Origin card or Overseas Citizen of India card, then the attestation could also be done by Public Notary / Gazetted Officer in India or practicing CA / CS / CWA.
